“Domestic Abuse Survivor Issues Warning of Deadly Threat”

Date:

A courageous survivor of domestic abuse, who endured severe violence from her ex-partner, has issued a chilling warning that he poses a deadly threat, following his recent imprisonment. Matthew John Ambler, 36, physically assaulted his former partner by violently handling her and strangling her, even brandishing a knife during a period of drug-induced paranoia, according to prosecutors at a court in York. The abuse had been ongoing since at least August 2025 when Ambler, under the influence of crack-cocaine, presented the blade in a threatening manner.

The victim, initially believing Ambler to be a decent person and being in a relationship with him, spoke out urgently when he was incarcerated for his violent behavior. In a statement to York Press, the former girlfriend, who chose not to disclose her identity, expressed her concerns that Ambler could escalate to lethal violence if not confronted. She stated, “I thought Matthew was a decent man. He turned out to be anything but.” She further voiced her fear that if she remained silent, he would resort to violence against her and other women, potentially leading to fatal consequences.

Recounting a distressing episode involving a knife, the victim described an incident on August 13 when Ambler, after consuming crack-cocaine, accused her and threatened self-harm with a Swiss Army knife. He physically attacked her, causing severe injuries including a broken nose, a partially collapsed lung, fractured rib, and head trauma. The violent assault continued even after seeking medical attention, highlighting the prolonged nature of the abuse.

Ambler, residing at an unspecified location, admitted guilt to causing grievous bodily harm, wielding a blade in a threatening manner, and engaging in non-fatal strangulation. He received a sentence of three years and seven months in prison, accompanied by a five-year restraining order prohibiting contact with his former partner. The court acknowledged Ambler’s acknowledgment of his temper issues exacerbated by substance abuse, urging him to address these challenges for a chance at a better life.
