US President Donald Trump expressed his belief that the war with Iran is nearing its end, despite unsuccessful negotiations over the weekend. In an interview with the Fox Business Network, Trump stated that he sees the conflict as almost over and highlighted Iran’s eagerness to strike a deal.
During the interview, Trump mentioned that if he were to lift sanctions immediately, it would take Iran decades to rebuild the country. He emphasized that the situation is ongoing, indicating a potential willingness from Iran to reach a deal.
When asked by Maria Bartiromo from FOX’s Mornings with Maria if the war is over, Trump reiterated his view that it is close to coming to an end. Trump has previously declared victory in the conflict and mentioned the possibility of a second round of talks in the near future, potentially in Islamabad, Pakistan.
The temporary ceasefire between Iran and the US is set to expire next week. The conflict between the two nations escalated on February 28 with joint US-Israeli strikes on key Iranian sites, leading to retaliatory actions from Iran, including the closure of the vital oil trade route, the Strait of Hormuz.
The US military initiated a blockade of Iranian ports on Monday to counter Iran’s actions and push for a negotiated settlement. Vice President JD Vance highlighted Trump’s aim for a significant agreement rather than a minor one, emphasizing the potential for Iran to prosper without nuclear weapons.
Pakistan’s finance minister, Muhammad Aurangzeb, expressed commitment to continuing efforts to facilitate negotiations between the US and Iran. He underscored the importance of dialogue and collaboration in resolving the conflict. United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres suggested the likelihood of talks resuming, following discussions with Pakistan’s deputy prime minister, Ishaq Dar.
