“Justice Dept Under Fire for Epstein Files Secrecy”

Date:

The Justice Department is currently under scrutiny for potentially withholding documents related to the Epstein Files. Allegations made by a woman against President Donald Trump were reportedly missing from the publicly released records. These allegations emerged following Jeffrey Epstein’s 2019 arrest, with the woman claiming she was sexually assaulted by both Trump and Epstein in the 1980s when she was underage. The Justice Department acknowledged the situation, stating that they are reviewing the flagged files for transparency and compliance with federal legislation.

Ghislaine Maxwell, a close associate of Epstein, is serving a 20-year prison sentence for sex trafficking. The Department assured that any wrongfully withheld documents falling under federal disclosure laws will be made public. The focal point of the controversy revolves around interviews conducted in 2019 with the accuser who accused Trump. Despite the accuser being interviewed multiple times, only one summary was included in the public documents.

Journalist Roger Sollenberger first flagged the missing records, which were later verified by various news outlets. Representative Robert Garcia announced that the House Oversight Committee would investigate the withheld documentation, suspecting illegal withholding of FBI interviews. The Justice Department recently disclosed over a million pages of Epstein-related documents, aiming for transparency while protecting potential abuse victims and maintaining legal confidentiality.

The Department clarified that some documents contained unfounded claims against President Trump, emphasizing their lack of credibility. The redaction process faced criticism for inadequate redactions and withdrawal of flagged materials. Epstein survivors’ lawyers raised concerns about careless redactions impacting nearly 100 victims. Publicly accessible files also included unverified allegations against Trump and other public figures, with the Department not providing a reason for withholding records related to these claims.
