A Jet2 flight traveling from the UK to the Canary Islands had to be redirected due to a “red code alert” being issued. The flight, which was en route from Bournemouth to Gran Canaria, was rerouted to Faro, Portugal after an unusual smell was detected in the aircraft cabin.
The situation prompted a “red code alert” at Faro airport, leading to the deployment of emergency response vehicles. Fortunately, the flight landed safely, with local reports attributing the diversion to “smoke in the cabin.”
The Jet2 Flight LS3643, which departed from Bournemouth at 9:55 am and was scheduled to reach Gran Canaria in approximately 3.5 hours, landed at Faro at around 12:25 pm local time. A Jet2 spokesperson stated that the decision to divert the flight to Faro was a precautionary measure taken by the well-trained crew upon detecting an unusual odor in the cabin, ensuring the safety of all passengers.
With over 140 passengers onboard the Boeing 747, it was reported that some crew members required assistance for smoke inhalation. This incident comes after a similar one in December last year when another Jet2 plane, flying from London Stansted to the Canary Islands, was rerouted to Portugal following a red alert, landing at Faro Airport instead of its intended destination of Fuerteventura.
Emergency services, including paramedics and firefighters, were on standby at Faro Airport as per the red alert protocol. Monitoring services indicated that the crew of the diverted Jet2 flight from London to Fuerteventura had declared an emergency and were diverting to Faro.
In a separate incident earlier in the same month, a plane carrying returning UK tourists had to divert due to a mid-air toilet malfunction. Ryanair flight FR1667, traveling from Fuerteventura to Bristol, rerouted to Lanzarote after encountering issues with some toilets during the journey.
