A village with a history spanning over 1,000 years now lies deserted following the relocation of its 500 residents in 2013. The inhabitants were moved to a new town with the same name, a few miles away, as part of plans to establish a large open-pit coal mine in the original village.
Despite the relocation of all residents by 2015, the German village of Morschenich-Alt remains untouched as the coal mining plans were abandoned. Instead, attention has shifted to the nearby Hambach open-pit lignite mine, which now sits abandoned over an expanse of 44 square kilometers.
Efforts are underway to potentially rename the village and transform it into a “village of the future.” However, these plans are currently on hold, leaving the village, possibly to be named Bürgewald in the future, deserted and gradually being reclaimed by nature. Despite its eerie emptiness, a few individuals have chosen to inhabit the village.
Urban explorer Colin, known for his exploits on the Bearded Explorer channel, has ventured through the ghostly village and engaged with one of its rare inhabitants. While exploring the quiet streets, Colin stumbled upon unexpected artifacts and noted that many aspects of the village’s future remain uncertain.
Describing the scene as eerie, Colin expressed curiosity about the village’s fate, emphasizing the encroaching nature that is slowly overtaking the abandoned houses and streets. The village’s church, consumed by fire, stands as a relic of its past beauty, now mostly in ruins.
With most shops and houses sealed off, some even bricked up, the deserted village paints a picture of abrupt abandonment. Colin highlighted the hollowness of the streets, likening the experience to being one of the last survivors in a post-apocalyptic world.
Despite its near-deserted state, Colin encountered a resident who shared insights into the current village life. The resident mentioned that only a handful of families, mainly from non-German origins such as Turkey, Afghanistan, and Egypt, now call the village home.
Colin observed the gradual decay of buildings and roads, as nature begins to reclaim the once-bustling village. Discussions revolve around transforming the defunct coal mine into an inland sea, although the logistics of such a project remain uncertain.
Renamed as Bürgewald in July 2024, the village symbolizes a shift towards revitalization and community development. Plans to convert the abandoned coal mine into a lake present hope for the future, yet uncertainties remain regarding the feasibility of such a transformation. Time will reveal the ultimate destiny of this evolving place.
