UK Braces for Record-Breaking Heatwave

Date:

Weather models are indicating that the UK could experience its hottest day on record soon as another heatwave looms. Temperatures soared past 37C this week, breaking the record for the hottest June day three days in a row, with Friday reaching 37.3C.

The latest GFS weather model forecasts the possibility of surpassing the current highest temperature in British history of 40.3C, set during the scorching July 2022 heatwave. The upcoming heatwave is expected to start on July 8, with temperatures potentially hitting 35C in the south-east and reaching 30C or higher in central and southern England, extending up to Yorkshire.

As the heatwave progresses, temperatures may soar to 37C in southern England on July 9 and reach 32C in parts of South Wales. By July 10, western and southern England could experience highs of 40C, with central and southern England likely to see temperatures ranging from 37C to 39C, making it possibly the hottest day ever recorded.

July 11 is projected to be even warmer, with western England possibly reaching 41C and temperatures in areas from Yorkshire to London expected to hit 40C. The heat is anticipated to slightly decrease by July 12, with maximum temperatures of 38C in the south-east, and a similar outlook for July 13, with a top temperature of 37C.

These soaring temperatures are likely to trigger an official heatwave, declared when temperatures exceed the heatwave threshold for three consecutive days. The threshold varies by region, with the south-east having a threshold of 28C, while temperatures drop to 25C further away.

Temperature anomaly maps show widespread areas of deep red and black across the UK, indicating temperatures well above the seasonal average. The GFS weather model predicts that 18 counties in England could experience temperatures of 40C or higher.

The Met Office suggests there is a higher chance of continued hot weather in the coming month, with the possibility of thundery showers. The forecast for July 12 to 26 indicates a likelihood of settled and drier than average conditions, with occasional outbreaks of rain and thunder, particularly in the north.

Towards the end of July, temperatures are expected to remain above normal, with occasional hot conditions. Stay updated with the latest news by selecting Daily Mirror as a ‘Preferred Source’ on Google News.
