Ian Huntley, the infamous murderer convicted for the Soham double homicide, sustained serious injuries in an attack at HMP Frankland, colloquially known as the “Monster Mansion” prison, where he is incarcerated alongside other high-profile criminals. Huntley, 52, serving a life term for the 2002 killings of Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman, was reportedly assaulted in the prison workshop earlier today. Emergency services responded to the incident, with Huntley subsequently taken to the hospital by road.
Durham Constabulary initiated an investigation at the facility, renowned for housing a significant number of notorious inmates, including terrorists, mass murderers, serial rapists, and the individual responsible for the tragic death of MP Jo Cox.
In a separate incident at Frankland, Damien Bendall, already serving a whole-life sentence for murdering his pregnant partner and three children, attacked fellow inmate Michael Mullaney with a hammer in 2024. Bendall was convicted for the assault and received further incarceration. The weapon used in the attack was described in court as similar to the one employed in Bendall’s previous heinous crime in Killamarsh, Derbyshire.
Frankland, operational for over 40 years, accommodates more than 800 offenders and houses a specialized unit for the most extreme inmates with terrorism or national security-related convictions. Notable inmates at Frankland include Michael Adebolajo, one of the individuals convicted of the brutal murder of British soldier Lee Rigby in 2013, and Charles Bronson, infamous for his violent criminal history across various UK prisons.
Hashem Abedi, involved in the 2017 Manchester Arena Bombing, Peter Sutcliffe, known as the ‘Yorkshire Ripper,’ Colin Pitchfork, convicted for child murders, and Thomas Mair, the perpetrator of MP Jo Cox’s murder, are among the other high-profile inmates at Frankland. Levi Bellfield, the serial killer convicted for multiple murders, has also been serving his sentence at the prison since 2020.
