Claire’s, a popular fashion accessories retailer, has recently closed down all of its 154 stores in the UK and Ireland, resulting in approximately 1,300 job losses, as confirmed by administrators.
Kroll, the administering body, announced that the closure of the chain’s remaining outlets has been completed, and employees have been informed about their redundancy. However, concession outlets and European stores will continue operations for the time being.
Following the acquisition of 156 Claire’s stores in the UK and Ireland by Mayfair financiers Modella Capital last September, the company stated that while the acquisition would lead to some store closures and job cuts, it could potentially save over 1,000 jobs in the region.
Unfortunately, in January of this year, the UK segment of Claire’s went into administration due to challenging retail conditions, including government policies, which significantly impacted businesses like Claire’s.
Furthermore, concerns are rising for TJ Jones, the rebranded WH Smith high street business, amid speculations of an upcoming restructuring that could result in a substantial number of store closures.
It is important to note that the closure of Claire’s standalone stores does not affect its 356 concessions, including those within Asda stores, and its headquarters.
Fashion expert Priya Raj highlighted a shift in consumer preferences away from colorful novelty jewelry, which Claire’s is renowned for, towards more minimal and curated pieces influenced by social media trends and mainstream fashion.
Recent reports indicate the closure of several Claire’s stores in various locations, including Cheshire Oaks, Sutton Coldfield, Stockport, Watford, and Bangor.
