A mother and her daughter created a disturbance during a bachelorette party, assaulting a woman until she lost consciousness, and then the mother attempted to attack the police.
The incident, which involved a street fight and the shattering of a betting shop window, was recorded on CCTV. Donna Ellis, 38, and her daughter Elisa Smith, 19, were apprehended by the authorities in Newcastle city center following the altercation.
The altercation erupted on August 10, 2024, during a night out to celebrate Ellis’ upcoming wedding. An argument ensued when a pub patron overheard Ellis insulting her daughter in a smoking area, leading to a violent outburst, as disclosed during their trial.
According to reports from Chronicle Live, the victim, who had been socializing at The Black Garter pub with colleagues, confronted Ellis after overhearing the derogatory remarks about her daughter. This confrontation quickly escalated as Ellis aggressively confronted the victim, provoking a physical altercation.
Subsequently, Ellis struck the victim in the face, while Smith joined in by dragging her to the ground where they both assaulted her until she lost consciousness. The situation further deteriorated as both women engaged in aggressive behavior towards others nearby. The violent episode, which included the breaking of a betting shop window, was captured on surveillance footage.
Law enforcement officials arrived at the scene, detained the mother and daughter, and during the arrest, Ellis attempted to assault a police officer.
The victim sustained fractures to her nose and septum, necessitating medical intervention to reset her broken nose.
In a statement, the victim expressed enduring headaches from the attack, fear of large crowds, and apprehension about potential future confrontations. The incident has also impacted her professional life as a support worker for individuals with mental health issues.
Ellis, with 103 prior convictions, and Smith, with no previous convictions, both residing on Killingworth Avenue, Backworth, North Tyneside, pleaded guilty to charges of assault and affray. Additionally, Ellis admitted to assaulting an emergency worker on that day and another day.
As a result, Ellis was sentenced to 29 months in prison, while Smith received a 13-month suspended sentence for 18 months, along with 200 hours of unpaid work.
Recorder Richard Stubbs characterized the incident as an “act of senseless violence,” highlighting the prolonged and relentless assault that took place, including actions after the victim lost consciousness.
During the proceedings, Mark Harrison, representing Ellis, conveyed her remorse for her actions, claiming she has no recollection of insulting her daughter and expressing shame over the violent footage. He also mentioned that Ellis sustained injuries during the altercation, including a facial wound.
In defense of Smith, Matthew Purves stated that she had a challenging upbringing but has academic qualifications and employment. Purves emphasized that the day of the incident should have been a joyous occasion for Smith.
