“Saree-ously Fast: Mother Aims to Break Marathon Record”

Date:

A mother of two is resolute in her goal to set a new Guinness World Record this weekend, aiming to inspire women of all backgrounds to run in attire they feel comfortable in. Madhusmita Jena, also known as Madu, will strive to break the record for completing the Manchester Marathon in a saree within three hours and 50 minutes, surpassing the current record holder by five minutes. For Madu, a resident of Stockport in Greater Manchester, running holds deeper significance beyond mere exercise.

Originally from England, Madu spent her formative years in Saudi Arabia before living in various countries across the Middle East and Africa. Her running journey began in October 2008 while residing in Dubai and caring for her newborn son. Feeling isolated at home, Madu sought solace in running, which led to her joining a group training for the Dubai marathon. Initially hesitant, she embraced the challenge and discovered a newfound passion for the sport.

Over the years, Madu, now 46, has achieved remarkable milestones in her running career, including completing numerous marathons and ultramarathons. Despite transitioning to a teaching career and relocating to the UK, her determination to excel in running remains unwavering.

Expressing the significance of her record attempt, Madu emphasized the importance of empowering women of diverse backgrounds to prioritize their physical and mental well-being. Encouraging others to make time for themselves, she highlighted the freedom of choice in attire for physical activities. As a proponent of inclusivity in running, Madu has previously completed marathons wearing a saree, symbolizing her cultural heritage and breaking stereotypes around running attire.

As she prepares for her upcoming challenge, Madu has adapted her training routine to accommodate hormonal changes and age-related factors. With a focus on interval training and perseverance, she aims to inspire women who may feel excluded from the running community due to societal norms.

Reflecting on her journey, Madu noted the evolution in diversity within the running community and the increasing acceptance of unconventional attire choices. Through her fundraising efforts for Heaton School, a special education institution in Stockport, she seeks to support children with severe learning difficulties by providing assistive technology that can enhance their educational experience.

For Madu, running serves as a meditative practice that enhances her role as a mother and educator. Encouraging others to pursue their goals and prioritize self-care, she embodies resilience and a commitment to breaking barriers in the running world.
