Man in 20s airlifted from Australian beach after crocodile attack

Date:

A man in his twenties was airlifted to a hospital after being attacked by a large crocodile on the western coast of Australia. The incident took place at a beach in the Kimberley region near Hidden Creek on the Dampier Peninsula. This area, located approximately 1300 miles north of Perth, is renowned for its pristine, untouched beaches.

The campground where the attack occurred is a popular tourist destination situated about 31 miles north of Broome along the Western Australian coastline. The region is abundant with tidal creeks, mangroves, and rivers, providing an ideal habitat for aggressive saltwater crocodiles.

Following the attack, the man was first taken to Broome Hospital in stable condition before being transferred to Royal Perth Hospital the next day via the Royal Flying Doctor Service, which offers emergency medical assistance in remote areas.

Authorities from the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation, and Attractions are investigating the incident and have been in contact with the man’s family. This attack marks the second crocodile incident reported in the Kimberley region in less than five months, highlighting the presence of these creatures along the coast.

Saltwater crocodiles, also known as “salties,” are prevalent in the Kimberley area and are known for their aggressive behavior. They can grow up to six meters in length and are responsible for most crocodile attacks in Australia. In contrast, freshwater crocodiles, known as “freshies,” prefer inland waterways.

Australia attracts a significant number of British tourists annually, with over 600,000 visitors in 2024, showing a notable increase from the previous year. Among them, nearly 80,000 Britons arrive on working holiday visas, contributing to a surge in backpacker travel.

Crocodiles are ancient reptiles with origins dating back over 200 million years. Despite their long history, they have survived extinction events and are considered living fossils.
