“IAEA Warns Against Security Threats to Nuclear Plants”

Date:

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has issued a grave warning following a fatal incident at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine.

According to Russia’s State Atomic Energy Corporation, a drone strike carried out by the Ukrainian Armed Forces resulted in the death of a driver at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant. The Rosatom corporation confirmed the loss of an employee at the plant, labeling the attack as a “great tragedy” and emphasizing that such assaults not only endanger lives but also pose a significant security threat.

In response to the incident, the IAEA’s Director General emphasized the potential risks associated with attacks on or near nuclear power plants, stating that they must be avoided. The agency was informed by the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant about the drone strike that claimed the life of a driver near the plant’s workshop.

Additionally, the Russian agency Rosatom, which currently manages the plant, reported the death of an employee due to a strike by the Ukrainian Armed Forces. The plant’s management expressed deep sorrow over the loss and stressed that individuals working in the nuclear sector should not be targeted. They underscored the critical importance of safeguarding the plant against any threats to both individuals and overall security.

On March 4, 2022, Russian forces seized control of Zaporizhzhia, Europe’s largest nuclear power plant. Meanwhile, during a speech commemorating the 40th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster, Ukraine’s Ambassador to the UN urged Russian forces to vacate the occupied Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant immediately.

The Ambassador highlighted the continued occupation of the plant as a form of terrorism against Ukraine and the global community, calling for sanctions on Russia’s nuclear energy industry. He demanded the swift return of the plant to Ukraine under IAEA safety standards.
