A man in his 70s tragically passed away after slipping off The Cobb in Lyme Regis and falling into the sea while his wife witnessed the incident. Despite swift response from a lifeboat crew following a 999 call, the challenging sea conditions made it difficult to reach the man. Eventually, a lifeboatman managed to rescue him by entering the water from the wall.
Rescuers used ropes to lift the man out of the sea, but he was declared deceased at the scene. His wife sustained head and arm injuries from the fall and received medical treatment. This unfortunate event occurred shortly after a similar incident involving a man in his 30s slipping off The Cobb and being saved by coastguards with the help of a life ring.
Dorset Police confirmed the man’s death and stated that the incident was not considered suspicious. The police also mentioned that the woman, who suffered a head injury, was taken to the hospital. The Lyme Regis RNLI expressed sadness over the incident, highlighting the slippery conditions on The Cobb and the efforts made to rescue the man.
The authorities urged caution in the area to prevent further accidents, emphasizing the importance of safety measures along the harbour wall.
