Britons vacationing in a popular destination in the Middle East have received advice to “move indoors and stay inside.” The British Embassy in the United Arab Emirates, where Dubai is situated, has encouraged UK citizens to find shelter as tensions escalate in the region. The embassy’s directive, effective from 13:00 local time (09:00 GMT), emphasizes the importance of staying indoors or seeking refuge in the nearest secure building.
Additionally, individuals are advised to avoid windows and consider seeking protection in an interior stairwell or a room with minimal windows. The embassy underscores the necessity of following instructions from local authorities in the area for safety. The UAE Defense Ministry has reported that the conflict has led to one ballistic missile and six drones striking the country’s territory, with ongoing military activities in the Middle East.
In response to the escalating situation, over 4,000 individuals have been evacuated to the UK from the Middle East, with a significant number arriving from the United Arab Emirates. The Foreign Office minister, Hamish Falconer, disclosed that more evacuation flights are anticipated. The minister highlighted the substantial support being provided, comparing it to the response during the Covid pandemic.
Despite these efforts, a repatriation flight from Oman to Britain faced delays due to challenges in boarding passengers. Home Office minister Alex Norris expressed the government’s seriousness in addressing the crisis, emphasizing the need for collective action with regional partners for mutual defense.
