Royal Navy Monitors Russian Warships in British Waters

Date:

British waters witnessed the presence of two Russian warships under surveillance by the Royal Navy. The Royal Navy closely monitored two Russian cargo vessels and their accompanying warships in a NATO operation spanning from the Mediterranean to the North Sea. British patrol vessel HMS Tyne, based in Portsmouth, along with a Wildcat helicopter from 815 Naval Air Squadron at Yeovilton, tracked the Russian Navy Ropucha-class landing ship Aleksandr Otrakovsky and merchant vessel Sparta IV.

The Russian ships’ journey from the Atlantic through the English Channel into the North Sea was closely watched by the British warship Tyne, utilizing advanced sensors and radars to monitor their movements. Simultaneously, the Wildcat conducted surveillance above the Channel to enhance security. Initially intercepted by HMS Cutlass from the Royal Navy’s Gibraltar Squadron in the Strait of Gibraltar, the Russian ships were then monitored by an allied vessel as they proceeded northward.

HMS Tyne was subsequently deployed for surveillance in the Atlantic approaches to the Channel. Within 48 hours of completing this mission, HMS Tyne and a Wildcat were redeployed to monitor another Russian Ropucha-class warship, Aleksandr Shabalin, and cargo ship MV Sabetta as they traveled westward through the English Channel.

Commenting on the operations, Defence Secretary John Healey MP expressed pride in the efforts of the Armed Forces to ensure the safety of Britain, both domestically and abroad. He emphasized the message of vigilance to Russia, stating that the UK forces are prepared to track, deter, and defend the nation amid ongoing international challenges.

HMS Tyne’s Executive Officer, Lieutenant Commander Matt Cavill, highlighted the importance of maintaining the security of the nation and working collaboratively with allied nations to strengthen global presence. Commander James Woods, Commanding Officer of 815 Naval Air Squadron, commended the professionalism and effectiveness demonstrated during the operations, emphasizing the role of Wildcat in maritime security and supporting national interests and NATO commitments.
