“Spouse of MP Arrested for Espionage Linked to China”

Date:

An individual, identified as the spouse of a Member of Parliament, was apprehended on suspicion of espionage linked to China after traveling to Nepal alongside Princess Beatrice. The arrest of David Taylor, who is married to Joani Reid from East Kilbride and Strathaven, took place in London recently. Reports indicate that Taylor and the Princess participated in a charitable journey lasting nine days in October 2016, organized by the Franks Family Foundation. Princess Beatrice, a patron of the foundation, joined a group of seven individuals on a trip through Asia, witnessing the humanitarian work of Nepalese eye surgeon Dr. Sandek Ruit, known for offering free medical services. Additionally, the Princess engaged in a private meeting with the Bhutanese Royal Family during the excursion.

The spokesperson for the Franks Family Foundation, confirming the trip, praised Princess Beatrice for her longstanding dedication to their causes and highlighted her involvement in various projects across Laos, Cambodia, and Nepal. The foundation’s statement clarified that during one of the missions, Princess Beatrice and a medical team traveled through Nepal, India, and Bhutan, where David Taylor, serving as a policy advisor for the foundation, also participated. The spokesperson emphasized that Princess Beatrice had no prior acquaintance with Taylor and has not had any contact with him since. Describing Taylor as a respectful and patriotic individual, they expressed shock at his arrest.

In a separate incident in 2024, Beatrice’s father, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, faced controversy concerning his association with an alleged Chinese spy named Yang Tengbo. Tengbo was involved in the Duke of York’s business ventures in China before being banned from the UK due to suspicions of clandestine activities on behalf of the Chinese Communist Party. Subsequent court revelations shed light on Tengbo’s interactions with Andrew and his involvement in a China-focused investment scheme.

Recently, arrests related to alleged Chinese espionage have caused a stir in Westminster as two other individuals, Steve Jones and Matthew Aplin, were also detained under the National Security Act. A source from Senedd described Aplin as a devoted Labour member who reportedly switched to the Reform party. Investigations are ongoing, and the arrested individuals, including Taylor, Jones, and Aplin, were released on bail following searches at multiple locations.

Joani Reid, the newly elected Labour MP for East Kilbride and Strathaven, announced her temporary resignation from the party pending an internal inquiry. Taylor, the head of programs at Asia House, a prominent think-tank fostering relations between Asia and Europe, previously served in governmental roles. His involvement in various parliamentary groups, including the APPG on Central Asia, has come under scrutiny following the recent arrests.

In response to the developments, Reid affirmed her lack of knowledge regarding any potential legal violations by her husband and distanced herself from China-related matters. Security minister Dan Jarvis condemned foreign interference attempts and assured that the UK government would combat any efforts to compromise national security.
