Triple murderer Anthony Russell is suspected to be the inmate responsible for the fatal assault on Ian Huntley in prison. Huntley, who suffered severe brain injuries in the attack, passed away in the hospital this morning following the alleged ambush by Russell at HMP Frankland in Durham on February 26.
Authorities from Durham Constabulary have not officially named the suspect, but a man in his mid-40s was apprehended on the day of the incident. The police confirmed today that Ian Huntley, aged 52, succumbed to his injuries after being attacked at HMP Frankland last week.
A comprehensive police inquiry is underway to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident, and a formal report is being prepared for the Crown Prosecution Service for potential charges to be considered.
Russell was convicted in 2022 for the murders of three individuals during a week-long spree characterized as “sustained and brutal.” The victims included Russell’s friend David Williams and his mother.
The series of crimes began on October 21, 2020, when Russell killed David Williams, wrongly accusing him of being involved with his girlfriend. He strangled Williams and concealed his body under a bed in Coventry. Subsequently, Russell murdered Williams’ mother, Julie Williams, inflicting numerous injuries in a violent attack.
After fleeing Coventry, Russell committed further crimes, including robbery and the rape and murder of Nicole McGregor. His violent actions culminated in the attack on Ian Huntley in prison, leading to Huntley’s tragic demise.
Russell’s heinous acts were met with a whole-life prison sentence, ensuring he will remain incarcerated indefinitely without the possibility of parole. The judge described Russell as exceptionally dangerous and emphasized the gravity of his crimes, which involved multiple murders conducted with extreme violence.
