Glasgow’s Union Street faces continued closure of one of the UK’s busiest train stations due to a significant fire incident. The fire, which originated at a vape shop, led to an explosion and building collapse near Glasgow’s Central Station and Grand Central Hotel.
Emergency responders, including nine fire appliances and three high-reach vehicles, have been on-site addressing the aftermath. The incident has caused considerable travel disruptions in the area. Network Rail Scotland’s Ross Moran mentioned that the reopening of Glasgow Central Station is uncertain, with a potential closure extending beyond today and tomorrow.
The public has shown support by raising over £80,000 for affected Glasgow businesses, such as Tattoo parlours and hair salons. Firefighters’ efforts prevented the fire from spreading to nearby establishments, including the Grand Central Hotel.
Firefighters utilized water from the River Clyde to combat the blaze, alongside over 250 firefighters involved in the operation. The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service utilized specialist resources, like high-volume pumps, to manage the fire effectively.
The fire’s impact has led to extensive damage, causing disruptions to railway services and traffic diversions around the station. Efforts are ongoing to assess the structural integrity of the affected building and ensure public safety.
