“UK Braces for Snow and Temperature Plunge”

Date:

Britons are expected to experience a significant drop in temperatures next week, with the likelihood of snowfall. The forecast indicates a decrease of up to approximately 12 degrees Celsius within a week due to a low-pressure system affecting the UK. This contrasts sharply with the warm weather enjoyed in many areas earlier this week, notably on Thursday, which marked the hottest day of the year so far.

According to the Met Office, Altnaharra in the Scottish Highlands recorded the highest temperature in the UK on Friday, surpassing 13 degrees Celsius. However, it is anticipated that temperatures will plummet to around 1 degree Celsius on Sunday, March 15, in that region due to the approaching low-pressure system from the west.

The UK is set to experience even colder conditions with the presence of strong westerly winds expected to reach speeds of up to 60mph on Sunday. While a temperature of 3 degrees Celsius is forecasted across the UK on Sunday, the wind chill factor will make it feel even colder.

The onset of colder weather is expected to bring a blizzard affecting large parts of Scotland, northern England, and the Midlands starting on Sunday. The Met Office’s mid-range forecast suggests the possibility of occasional rain showers, particularly in the western and northwestern regions, accompanied by strong winds and potential frost and hill snow during intermittent colder periods.

Despite last week’s above-average temperatures in parts of Southeast England, including a reading of 19.2 degrees Celsius in Northolt, west London, the upcoming weather front approaching from the Atlantic will bring a significant change. Meteorologist Nick Finnis from Netweather forecasts an unsettled week ahead with rain showers, increasing wind, and a shift to colder conditions, with a risk of hill snow and widespread frost.

As reported by the Mirror, a blizzard is expected to blanket large areas of the UK with snowfall. The heaviest snowfall is projected to occur in Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, and the Northwest of England.

The BBC Weather outlook for March 16 to 29 suggests a continuation of high pressure over the European continent and low-pressure systems moving across the eastern North Atlantic, occasionally affecting the UK with frontal systems.
