Princess of Wales Smiles at Commonwealth Day Service

Date:

The Princess of Wales was captured engaging in a discreet conversation during the significant royal gathering of the year. Accompanied by Prince William, they joined the King and Queen at the annual Commonwealth Day service at Westminster Abbey, honoring the 56 nations of the Commonwealth.

Upon arrival, the royal family assembled at the Great West Door of the Abbey, where they were welcomed by Dr David Hoyle, Dean of Westminster, before the King and Queen arrived. Following a procession down the aisle to their front-row seats, Kate, adorned in a navy Catherine Walker coat dress, was seen perusing the order of service before catching the attention of photographers inside the venue.

In a quick moment, the princess flashed a smile at the photographers and mouthed a greeting. The BBC did not air the event live for the first time in 37 years, marking a change in the traditional calendar of royal events at the Abbey.

The Commonwealth Service, which commenced in 1972, celebrates the rich diversity of the Commonwealth nations. This service is the highlight of a week-long series of events across the Commonwealth, including faith gatherings, debates, flag-raising ceremonies, and cultural activities.

With 54 member states and a population of 2.4 billion people, the Commonwealth focuses on the theme “Unlocking opportunities together for a prosperous Commonwealth,” emphasizing collaboration among member countries to address current challenges and foster mutual prosperity.

As the head of the Commonwealth, Charles highlighted the potential for prosperous trade among trusted partners within the institution. He emphasized the unique nature of the Commonwealth as a voluntary union promoting open discussions and debates to enhance the lives of nearly three billion individuals in member states.

During the event, Spice Girl Geri Halliwell-Horner, an ambassador for the Royal Commonwealth Society, delivered an address and greeted the King with two kisses. Meanwhile, an anti-monarchy protest occurred outside the abbey, with demonstrators holding banners advocating for the removal of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor from the line of succession.

Several Commonwealth leaders, including Australia, Canada, and New Zealand, have supported calls to remove Andrew from the line of succession, pending agreement through an Act of Parliament.
