A young man, David Brown, caused the death of an elderly pedestrian, James Atkinson, while driving recklessly in his BMW. Brown, in a rush to reach his mother’s house for dinner, collided with Atkinson, who was on his way to band practice. Despite fleeing the scene initially, Brown’s mother, who later testified against him, brought him back to confront the aftermath.
Brown, 25, has been sentenced to four years in jail for the incident that occurred in Bebington, Merseyside. The court heard that Brown was speeding and driving erratically, overtaking parked vehicles and failing to notice Atkinson crossing the road. Atkinson sustained severe injuries and later passed away in the hospital.
During the trial, it was revealed that Brown denied the dangerous nature of his driving but admitted to failing to stop after the accident. The court acknowledged his lack of prior convictions and his remorse, although Brown still maintained his innocence regarding the collision.
The judge highlighted the tragic loss of Mr. Atkinson, a respected musician, and the impact of Brown’s actions on both the victim’s family and his own. Brown was also disqualified from driving for seven years and will need to undergo an extended retest before regaining his driving privileges.
