After facing numerous challenges and delays, the grand opening of the largest wildlife bridge in the world has now been unveiled. Escalating expenses and construction setbacks have caused the project to be postponed by at least one year.
Construction has been ongoing for four and a half years on the Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing above the 101 Freeway in Agoura Hills, situated to the north of Los Angeles. The official opening date is set for December 2.
On Earth Day, project leaders announced the long-awaited news, expressing their excitement and anticipation for the forthcoming celebration with the public.
The primary segment of the bridge, spanning across 10 lanes of the freeway, has been predominantly finished and adorned with landscaping. Remaining tasks involve constructing over Agoura Road and linking both ends of the bridge to the surrounding open areas.
Ultimately, the bridge will provide a safe passage for wildlife. Beth Pratt, the regional director for the National Wildlife Federation in California, has already observed various wildlife species enjoying the bridge, including butterflies and different bird species.
The objective of the project is to revive the mountain lion population in the region. Additionally, animals frequently affected by vehicle collisions on the freeway, such as bears, bobcats, foxes, coyotes, and deer, will benefit from the bridge.
The project encountered multiple setbacks and criticisms. Initially budgeted at $90 million (£66.5 million) when construction commenced in 2022 with an anticipated completion date of 2025, the total cost has now escalated to $114 million (£84.5 million), funded through private donations and public resources.
Project leaders cited near-record rainfall saturating the site in 2023 and 2024 as a significant cause for delays. Moreover, inflation, labor shortages, and the intricate nature of the project contributed to the increased project costs.
In a blog update, project leaders emphasized the complexity of the undertaking, stating that it is not a typical overpass but rather a living ecosystem built over one of the busiest freeways in the nation, spanning 10 lanes.
