“Glasgow Historic Building Collapses Further After Fire”

Date:

A significant historic building in the heart of Glasgow that was destroyed by fire last weekend has now experienced further collapse. Glasgow City Council confirmed that the structure sustained additional damage after the initial blaze on Union Street that led to a partial collapse. The fire originated in a vape shop on Sunday afternoon, quickly spreading across four floors.

Following the incident, Glasgow Central Station had to shut down temporarily, with limited train services now in operation post the fire outbreak. According to reports from the Daily Record, authorities stated that the remaining Victorian building is now deemed “seriously compromised.”

Raymond Barlow, the head of building standards in the city, mentioned that since the fire’s onset, efforts have been ongoing to assess the damage and assist the fire service. Various collapses have occurred, with the latest impacting the southern gable of the structure, leaving it in a precarious state.

While service has resumed on the lower level of Glasgow Central station, the main section will remain closed for the week. Network Rail engineers will conduct a thorough examination to evaluate any potential damage caused by the fire.

Scotland’s First Minister, John Swinney, described the fire’s impact as extensive, anticipating significant disruptions for commuters and the city center. He also vowed support for the numerous businesses affected by the incident.
