A mother from Fife, Scotland, who suffered from vision loss in one eye due to four brain tumors, has attributed her condition to a contraceptive injection. Tammy Croston, 47, began using the injectable contraceptive called Depo-Provera in 1999 and intermittently used it for several years until she discovered the presence of four non-cancerous tumors in her skull, prompting her to discontinue the injections.
Following complications during the surgery to remove the brain tumors, Tammy lost vision in her right eye. She is among 11 women in Scotland pursuing legal action against Pfizer, the manufacturer of Depo-Provera. Despite facing jurisdictional challenges that prevented her London-based solicitor from representing her, Tammy is determined to seek compensation and is scheduled to meet with her local MSP, Willie Rennie, for support.
Approximately 2,500 women in the US are suing Pfizer over similar claims. Tammy is advocating for fair representation for Scottish women affected by Depo-Provera, emphasizing the importance of awareness about the potential side effects of the contraceptive. Studies have indicated that prolonged use of Depo-Provera can significantly elevate the risk of developing meningiomas, benign brain tumors that may necessitate surgical intervention.
Law firms in London are investigating cases for potential claims in the UK, but jurisdictional restrictions have hindered Scottish women from advancing their claims. Tammy expressed frustration over the disparity in legal opportunities based on residency, stating that Scottish women are at a disadvantage compared to their English and Welsh counterparts.
MSP Willie Rennie expressed eagerness to meet with Tammy to understand her challenges and ensure access to appropriate legal support. He emphasized the need for equitable treatment of Scottish women in legal matters, emphasizing that geographical location should not impede their pursuit of justice.
Pfizer, in response to the allegations, reaffirmed its commitment to patient safety and highlighted the extensive global monitoring of its medications, including Depo-Provera. The pharmaceutical company emphasized the long-standing approval and safety profile of Depo-Provera, underscoring its track record of efficacy and safety for millions of patients worldwide.
