Michigan synagogue attacker Ayman Ghazali, a Lebanese-born US citizen, has been identified in a recent photo following his death. The image shows Ghazali wearing a black Adidas cap and a full beard, with law enforcement sources labeling him as “the face of hate” in the aftermath of an attack on a preschool at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield, Michigan. Ghazali reportedly drove his car, loaded with mortar shells, into the synagogue, prompting the FBI to consider it an anti-Semitic act of violence against the Jewish community.
According to authorities, the 41-year-old forcefully entered the synagogue by ramming his vehicle through the door and into a hallway before being confronted by armed security personnel who managed to halt his attack by opening fire. Subsequently, Ghazali perished as his vehicle caught fire, and he inflicted a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his head. Fortunately, all 140 preschool children at the center were unharmed.
FBI agent Jennifer Runyan stated that during the gunfight, Ghazali’s car caught fire, leading to his self-inflicted gunshot wound. Ghazali, who resided in Detroit’s suburbs and worked at a Mediterranean restaurant, was described by a neighbor as well-liked and a hard worker. It was reported that he had been absent from work leading up to the synagogue attack.
Concerns had been raised about Ghazali to federal officials before the incident, as he had previously been stopped in Atlanta in 2019 after returning to the US from abroad. Despite claiming to have traveled for a hair transplant, authorities suspected his involvement with Hezbollah terrorists in Lebanon.
The motive behind Ghazali’s attack on the synagogue was believed to be linked to the deaths of his two brothers, niece, and nephew in an Israeli-led airstrike in Masghara, Lebanon. The attack came amidst heightened tensions between Israel and Iran, with the US also participating in a military campaign.
