Soham murderer Ian Huntley spent his final years in prison isolated from other inmates at Durham’s Frankland Prison, known as “Monster Mansion” for housing high-profile offenders. Reports reveal he mostly stayed in his cell, engaging in activities like crafting matchstick models and hoarding food due to fears of poisoning. Huntley even considered converting to Islam in an attempt to improve his prison experience. He witnessed the departure of another notorious inmate, Peter Sutcliffe, shortly before Sutcliffe’s death in 2020.
Huntley’s solitary life in prison saw him dressing oddly while performing cleaning duties, aware of the constant threat of violence from fellow inmates. Despite efforts to protect him, Huntley ultimately met a tragic end, with his personal possessions, including food items and art supplies, now set to be handed over to his next of kin, likely his mother. Huntley infamously murdered 10-year-olds Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman in 2002, leading to his imprisonment for life with a minimum of 40 years.
Following his arrest and subsequent conviction in 2003, Huntley was moved to Frankland Prison in 2008, where he remained until his death. His former girlfriend Maxine Carr, who was convicted of perverting the course of justice, was released and given a new identity in 2004. Huntley’s life in prison took a deadly turn when fellow inmate Anthony Russell allegedly killed him in a workshop, leading to Huntley’s death ten days later. Russell is currently in custody and is scheduled to appear in court for a hearing on April 24.
