A 12-year-old boy is in critical condition following a collision involving an electric scooter and a car.
The incident occurred on Earsdon Close, close to the intersection with West Denton Way in the western part of Newcastle, around 5pm on Sunday. The boy was riding the electric scooter on the footpath south of West Denton Way when he tried to cross the junction with Earsdon Close and was hit by a red Volvo V40 car traveling on the road.
Suffering severe injuries, the boy was rushed to Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary, where he remains in a life-threatening state. His family has been notified and is receiving assistance from specialized officers.
The Volvo driver, a 48-year-old man, stopped at the scene and was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury due to careless driving. He was subsequently released pending further investigation.
The incident prompted a significant emergency response involving 10 police vehicles, an ambulance crew, a specialist paramedic, and an advanced paramedic practitioner. The road was shut down for several hours but was reopened by 9:30 pm, as reported by Chronicle Live.
The Roads Policing team of Northumbria Police has initiated an inquiry and is seeking witnesses or individuals with dashcam or CCTV footage to step forward.
