“Kent Faces Intensified Meningitis Outbreak with 27 Cases”

Date:

A dangerous strain of meningitis affecting Kent may be more easily transmissible than previous strains, according to experts. The meningitis B strain has been linked to 27 confirmed or suspected cases, including two deaths in the region. Professor Robin May, the UKHSA chief scientific officer, described this as an unusual outbreak, with investigations ongoing to understand why the transmission of meningitis in these cases may have intensified.

Professor May, speaking on BBC Breakfast, highlighted the atypical nature of this outbreak, noting a significant cluster of cases originating from what seems to be a single event. The increase in cases could be due to changes in individual behaviors or the bacteria itself evolving to enhance transmission.

The professor explained that the bacteria responsible for meningitis can spread through the sharing of items like utensils, cups, and vapes. In response to the outbreak, more than 100 students in Kent were turned away from receiving meningitis vaccinations due to capacity issues.

Health Secretary Wes Streeting announced that additional individuals affected by the outbreak would be offered vaccinations, particularly those who visited a local hotspot between March 5 and March 15. The UK Health Security Agency reported a total of 27 confirmed or suspected meningitis cases in Kent, with two fatalities and ongoing investigations into the outbreak.

Mr. Streeting encouraged individuals who may have been exposed to come forward for antibiotics and vaccinations, expanding the preventive measures to various student populations. The UKHSA announced that eligible patients across England can now request vaccinations and antibiotics from their local GPs immediately. In Kent, over 8,500 antibiotics and 1,600 vaccines have been administered to combat the meningitis outbreak.
