Energy bills are projected to increase to nearly £2,000 annually by summer due to the ongoing conflict in Iran, according to leading industry analysts at Cornwall Insight. The surge in wholesale gas prices has prompted an upward revision in regulator Ofgem’s price cap, now expected to rise by over £330.
While most households are protected by the price cap, limiting the rates that suppliers can charge, the recent spike in wholesale energy costs following military actions in the Middle East threatens to offset any relief. Cornwall Insight now anticipates Ofgem’s July price cap to reach £1,973, with electricity accounting for around £954 and gas for £1,018.
Dr. Craig Lowrey, a principal consultant at Cornwall Insight, highlighted the impact of the conflict on energy prices, emphasizing that the volatility may persist even if wholesale prices stabilize. Ofgem reviews the price cap every three months, considering changes in wholesale costs, policy measures, and network charges.
