Britain would have a mere 20-minute heads-up if Iran managed to launch a missile capable of reaching the UK, according to a warning from Israel. The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) raised concerns about Iran’s missile capabilities, highlighting the potential threat to major European cities like London, Paris, and Berlin. The IDF emphasized that Iran’s missile reach posed a global danger that could draw international allies into a conflict without prior consultation.
This warning has brought attention to the UK’s missile defense readiness, with experts cautioning that current systems may not be prepared to intercept such threats promptly. In the event of an Iranian missile threat, intelligence satellites would detect it first, prompting senior security officials to swiftly convene in Pindar, a secure bunker located deep beneath the Ministry of Defence.
Iran’s Khorramshahr-4 warhead, known for its high speed of up to mach 10 (7,672 mph), could cover the 2,750 miles between Tehran and London in approximately 20 minutes. Despite recent missile demonstrations by Iran targeting locations like Diego Garcia, experts believe the likelihood of a successful strike on the UK or other European targets remains low.
Analysts suggest that any missile targeting the UK would need to be lightweight and fast, requiring smaller payloads for effective impact. While potential threats exist, the UK benefits from its own defense systems, including Type 45 destroyers and NATO’s Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD) system, designed to intercept long-range missiles.
Government officials have expressed skepticism about Iran’s capability to target the UK directly, emphasizing the country’s military preparedness to defend against any potential threats. Communities secretary Steve Reed dismissed specific assessments of Iran’s intentions to target the UK or Europe, affirming the UK’s readiness to safeguard its territory.
