A mother is raising awareness about the alarming meningitis outbreak following the sudden passing of her 19-year-old daughter who never woke up after a festival. Livia Wilson, who had attended the Parklife festival in Manchester with friends, returned home exhausted and complained of a severe headache before going to bed on June 15, 2022.
Initially thinking Livia had simply overexerted herself at the festival, her mother Alison, a finance worker at the NHS, administered paracetamol. Tragically, Livia, a waitress, did not wake up the next day. It was later revealed that she had contracted meningococcal type B meningitis, the same strain currently circulating in Kent.
Expressing her grief and frustration, Alison emphasized the need for the NHS to provide free and accessible vaccinations to safeguard young individuals. She highlighted the heartbreaking situation in Kent and urged for proactive measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
Alison shared her anguish over the loss of her daughter and the importance of understanding the symptoms and risks associated with meningitis. Stressing the significance of vaccinations, she regretted not being aware of the availability of the MenB vaccine privately, as it could have potentially saved Livia’s life.
Alison’s plea extends to parents, advocating for them to consider vaccinating their children against meningococcal type B meningitis, especially teenagers who are at higher risk due to social interactions at events like festivals. She underscored the urgency of making such vaccinations accessible to young adults to prevent further loss of life and the lasting impact on affected families.
The UKHSA assured an ample supply of MenB vaccines within the NHS, addressing concerns raised by pharmacies struggling to acquire stock for private use. Notably, Boots implemented a queuing system on their website for those seeking private vaccination services due to high demand.
