A tragic incident unfolded as a British newlywed lost his life during a vacation in Colombia, accompanied by his friends, including his newlywed wife. The deceased, identified as James Winkles from the Isle of Wight, was enjoying his time in a coastal resort with his companions when the unfortunate event occurred. His body was discovered on El Laguito Beach in Cartagena the following morning.
James had been in Cartagena for 12 days, staying at a luxury hotel in the El Laguito area to commemorate his recent wedding. It was reported that the 30-year-old went missing after entering the water in challenging weather and sea conditions the night before his body was found near the shore around 7 am. Emergency services were called to the scene, confirming his demise. His body was then taken to a local morgue for further investigation into the circumstances surrounding his apparent drowning.
Heart-wrenching footage circulating locally displayed a woman, believed to be his long-term partner, mourning over James’ body on the beach, expressing profound sorrow and disbelief. The investigation into his death is still ongoing. Notably, James was the second individual to drown off El Laguito Beach this year, following the tragic death of chef Samuel Peñates Cortina in a similar incident.
Authorities have issued warnings urging swimmers to exercise caution before entering the water, especially during adverse weather conditions. They advised people to avoid swimming when winds are strong and waves exceed 1.9 meters, to wait after eating before swimming, and to refrain from excessive alcohol consumption.
At the Isle of Wight’s second-hand car dealership where James was believed to have worked, a receptionist mentioned that the staff is deeply shocked and too distressed to comment on the tragic event. The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) spokesperson conveyed their support for the deceased’s family, stating, “We are supporting the family of a British national who has died in Colombia.”
