“Father’s Brain Tumor Diagnosis Highlights Urgency of Medical Attention”

Date:

A father has shared his experience of recognizing warning signs before receiving a devastating diagnosis, urging individuals with similar symptoms to promptly seek medical help.

Paul Colligan, 51, a resident of Maghull and an electrician, used to cycle 100 miles per week. However, during a ride in December, he encountered vision issues and began uttering perplexing statements. His wife Karen mentioned that he started imagining his deceased father cycling alongside him, and upon returning home, he appeared unwell.

Despite not experiencing headaches, Paul continuously felt disoriented and “spaced out.” Initially attributing these symptoms to stress related to his mother’s illness, who later passed away in January, Paul finally sought medical attention on December 12 after feeling unwell.

After doctors suspected a stroke but found no evidence of it in a brain scan, Paul was diagnosed with transient global amnesia, a sudden episode of confusion that typically does not pose serious risks. Despite this diagnosis, Paul’s health continued to deteriorate, with persistent disorientation and a concerning complexion.

Subsequently, on February 11, coinciding with his son’s 21st birthday, Paul started experiencing severe headaches. At his mother’s funeral on February 23, he described feeling vertigo while speaking. These ongoing health issues led Paul to suspect a brain tumor, which was confirmed through a CT scan, revealing a glioblastoma, a severe grade four brain tumor.

Upon learning about the tumor, Paul and Karen were overwhelmed with disbelief and shock. They had to break the news to their sons, who were in their twenties, and everyone was deeply affected by the grim prognosis.

Following the cancer diagnosis, the couple had to confront the financial challenges brought by Paul’s inability to work and Karen’s focus on caregiving. A GoFundMe page was launched by a friend to support the family, raising over £38,000 within a short period. The community’s generosity and support have been a source of comfort for the family as they navigate this difficult time.

As Paul prepares for chemotherapy and radiotherapy, his friends and the community are organizing a fundraising event in Aintree for his upcoming birthday on April 26. He emphasizes the importance of seeking medical attention for unusual symptoms, particularly persistent headaches that last longer than a day or two, urging others not to delay seeking help.
