“NHS Criticized for Delay in Reporting Meningitis Outbreak”

Date:

The NHS has faced criticism for allegedly delaying the notification of a meningitis outbreak in Kent by two days. A patient arrived at The Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother Hospital in Margate on Wednesday, March 11, but the hospital only reported the case to the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) on Friday, March 13, after confirming the diagnosis. This delay hindered the prompt tracing of close contacts and identification of a potential outbreak.

Health Secretary Wes Streeting acknowledged the issue, stating that while the delay did not seem to significantly impact the situation, the standard 24-hour reporting timeframe is crucial. East Kent Hospitals University Foundation Trust, responsible for the hospital, admitted the missed opportunity to notify UKHSA earlier.

The trust has been cooperating with UKHSA since the diagnosis confirmation to manage suspected meningitis cases. The Trust’s response was praised, as cases, both confirmed and suspected, have started to decline. However, the trust was previously identified for the NHS Intensive Recovery program due to long patient waiting times, financial challenges, and leadership turnover.

In the ongoing outbreak, two students have tragically lost their lives, with several other cases confirmed and under investigation. Vaccination efforts for University of Kent students began, with affected individuals receiving hospital care, including intensive care for some.

UKHSA highlighted their established procedures for handling such outbreaks and indicated an immediate public health response was triggered following the emergence of critical cases.
