Asda Chairman Warns of Fuel Shortages Amid Iran Conflict

Date:

Some fuel stations are facing temporary shortages, according to the executive chairman of Asda, Allan Leighton. He mentioned that the recent Iran conflict has impacted fuel supplies at a time when demand from drivers has surged. Leighton explained that their fuel volumes have significantly increased, causing demand to outstrip supply temporarily. He noted that supply constraints are currently causing sporadic shortages, especially when waiting for deliveries, but assured that these issues are promptly addressed.

Asda, the UK’s second-largest fuel retailer with 320 forecourts nationwide, experienced limited disruptions affecting only a few pumps at some petrol stations. The upcoming Easter holidays are expected to see a surge in fuel demand as millions of Britons hit the roads for vacations and day trips. The pressure on fuel supplies is anticipated to peak over the Easter weekend, with increased road and forecourt congestion.

Government officials have advised against panic buying and excessive fuel hoarding, despite a few petrol stations reporting temporary stock shortages. The Motor Fuel Group declined to comment on the issue, while the Petrol Retailers Association assured that fuel supply across the UK remains stable.

Diesel supplies are expected to be impacted starting mid-April due to stock depletion post the Iran conflict. Contingency plans for fuel rationing are in place in case of prolonged disruptions in oil supplies. The UK government is monitoring the situation closely and companies are working to maintain stable fuel supply levels.

The recent surge in oil prices following the Iran conflict has led to a spike in pump prices, with the nationwide average for unleaded reaching 150p per liter and diesel nearing 180p per liter. Motorists are advised to plan refueling stops carefully, especially with higher prices at motorway services.

Amid accusations of profiteering from increased fuel prices, Asda’s Allan Leighton denied any such practices. He criticized the government for benefiting from higher fuel taxes and called for transparency in how the additional revenue is utilized. The government is facing calls to reconsider the upcoming fuel duty increases.

Concerns over rising food prices due to prolonged Middle East tensions were raised by Leighton, who emphasized the need to mitigate inflationary pressures. Asda reported a decline in profits last year as it focused on price reductions, but saw a return to sales growth.

Overall, the fuel supply situation in the UK remains stable despite temporary shortages at some petrol stations. As prices continue to rise, consumers are advised to monitor fuel costs and plan their journeys accordingly.
