A woman who was a victim of gang rape delivered a powerful and emotional message to her father before opting for euthanasia.
Noelia Castillo Ramos, a 25-year-old from Barcelona, was sexually assaulted by three men in 2022. Following the traumatic incident, she attempted to end her life by jumping from a building but survived with paralysis from the waist down. Noelia endured chronic pain and disability without prospects of improvement.
Having a troubled childhood and struggling with mental health issues, including borderline personality disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder, Noelia had battled suicidal thoughts since a young age. Despite seeking assisted suicide 18 months prior, her father opposed her decision, witnessing her fall in 2022.
Expressing her feelings of resentment towards her father for hindering her euthanasia request, Noelia stated that she no longer sympathized with him. Despite opposition from her father and conservative groups, a committee in Catalonia approved Noelia’s euthanasia request, which took place on March 26, 2024, as scheduled.
Before her passing, Noelia expressed relief at finally being able to rest from the torment and pain she had endured. She had made her wishes clear from the beginning, and her mother, Yolanda Ramos, stayed by her side at Sant Camil Hospital during the procedure aimed at ensuring a painless death. Family members, including her father, gathered at the hospital to spend time with her before the euthanasia was conducted.
