North Korea has issued a menacing weapons threat to its adversaries, including the United Kingdom. Supreme Leader Kim Jong-Un oversaw trials of his newly enhanced arsenal and praised it as a significant advancement for his military capabilities. The tests included an upgraded high-thrust solid-fuel engine for weapons, as reported by state media on Sunday. This provocative demonstration aligns with Kim’s objective to acquire more agile and undetectable missiles to target the United States and its allies, including the UK.
Photographs depicted the dictator observing a substantial plume of smoke as the new military engine operated at an undisclosed location. The Korean Central News Agency stated that Kim monitored the ground jet test of the engine, which utilized a composite carbon fiber material. The agency mentioned that the engine’s maximum thrust has increased to 2,500 kilotons, up from around 1,970 kilotons recorded in a similar solid-fuel engine test in September.
These assessments were conducted within North Korea’s five-year strategy to enhance its “strategic strike capabilities,” a term denoting nuclear-capable ballistic missiles and other armaments, according to state media. Kim proudly hailed the latest military test, asserting its pivotal role in elevating the nation’s strategic military prowess to the highest level. Nonetheless, some analysts speculate that North Korea’s assertions may be exaggerated.
An expert, Lee Choon Geun from South Korea’s Science and Technology Policy Institute, suggested that North Korea’s report on the recent test might be misleading due to the omission of crucial details, such as the engine’s total combustion time. Lee indicated that North Korea’s solid-fuel engine development program could be encountering delays or that the country may be striving to develop a superior engine, potentially with technical support from Russia. Collaboration between the two nations has intensified in recent times, with North Korea providing troops and armaments to assist Russia’s controversial actions in Ukraine.
In recent years, North Korea has conducted numerous tests of long-range missiles, showcasing the potential to target the US, including missiles employing solid propellants that make pre-launch detection more challenging. The country’s older liquid-fuel missiles necessitate fueling before launches and have limited endurance.
North Korea’s history of making grandiose claims regarding significant weapons advancements has often been met with skepticism from external sources. For instance, in 2024, North Korea asserted a successful multiwarhead missile test, which South Korea promptly refuted as a ruse to conceal a failed launch.
Since the breakdown of Kim’s diplomacy with former US President Donald Trump in 2019, North Korea has intensified efforts to expand its nuclear arsenal. At a Workers’ Party congress in February, Kim hinted at the possibility of dialogue with Trump but urged Washington to abandon demands for North Korea’s nuclear disarmament as a prerequisite for negotiations.
