“Beware: eBay Scammers Offer Fake Beach Huts in Kent”

Date:

Scammers on eBay and similar online platforms are deceiving buyers by offering beachfront huts that they do not own at prices significantly below market value. This fraudulent activity has been reported in Tankerton, near Whitstable, Kent, with unsuspecting customers falling victim to the elaborate schemes of these fraudsters.

In some instances, the scammers have gone to extreme lengths, including breaking into the huts to show them to potential buyers, all while providing excuses for not meeting in person. Canterbury City Council has acknowledged the rise in fraudulent selling activities and has advised both buyers and owners to stay vigilant.

Chris Cornell, the council’s cabinet member for economic development and coastal towns, emphasized the importance of being cautious when encountering offers that seem too good to be true. He urged individuals to report any suspicious activities to Kent Police and stressed the need for beach hut owners to be alert to potential fraud.

While genuine beach huts in Kent, such as those in Tankerton, are being sold by reputable agents for around £60,000, buyers should exercise caution when considering private sales. The council recommends purchasing huts only through established agents or beach hut associations to avoid falling prey to scams.

Concerns have been raised by beach hut groups, with reports of fraudulent sales surfacing in the area. Sue Halfpenny from the Herne Bay Beach Hut Association urged the public to be vigilant and report any suspicious activities related to beach hut sales.

Prospective buyers are advised to verify the legitimacy of any sale before making payments, especially if the deal appears unusually cheap. eBay, in response to the issue, emphasizes a zero-tolerance policy against fraud and encourages users to report any scams to the authorities and to eBay directly for investigation.

Maintaining a safe marketplace for buyers and sellers is a priority for eBay, which collaborates closely with law enforcement to combat fraudulent activities. The company assures users that any reported scams will be thoroughly investigated and appropriate action taken.
