British Tourist Dies in Spain After Drug Overdose

Date:

A British vacationer passed away while on a trip to Spain after being taken to a hospital. The deceased, identified as Paul William Jones, 36, reportedly ingested illegal substances before boarding a flight, leading to his demise. Mr. Jones, a resident of Wattstown, Rhondda, Wales, had a history of drug use, as revealed during the inquest at Pontypridd Coroners’ Court.

Coroner Rachel Knight stated that on February 22, 2025, Mr. Jones likely overdosed on illicit substances before embarking on his holiday to Spain. His condition worsened upon arrival in Spain, and he eventually succumbed to his condition at Marina Baixa Hospital in Alicante on February 27. The cause of death, determined by a post-mortem examination, was hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy—a severe brain injury resulting from decreased oxygen supply to the brain, linked to Mr. Jones’ drug consumption.

The inquest did not find any indication that Mr. Jones had intended to end his life. Coroner Knight concluded that the death was drug-related, with the medical explanation citing hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy and drug overdose as contributing factors.
