“Fatal M23 Crash: Driver in Custody, Passenger Killed”

Date:

A driver has been taken into custody following a tragic incident on the M23 highway that resulted in the death of a 23-year-old woman and severe injuries to a 23-year-old man. The collision involved a single vehicle and took place on the M23 northbound section between junction 10 for Crawley and junction nine for Gatwick Airport in West Sussex, occurring shortly before 5 a.m. on Thursday.

The car veered off the main road and struck the central reservation as well as a tree. Tragically, the female passenger, a 23-year-old from London, was declared deceased at the scene, with her family being notified. The male passenger, also 23 years old and from London, sustained serious injuries and is currently receiving medical treatment in a hospital.

The driver, a 21-year-old man from London, has been apprehended on suspicion of causing death and serious injury through dangerous driving. He is currently in police custody as investigations continue. Inspector Matt Wightwick of Sussex Police expressed condolences, emphasizing the ongoing investigation’s focus on uncovering the incident’s circumstances.

Authorities have closed the northbound carriageway for investigation and recovery operations, urging witnesses or individuals with dashcam footage to provide information to assist in the inquiry. The closure, impacting travelers, especially those heading to the airport, is necessary for the investigation’s progress and vehicle recovery. West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service responded to the collision, confirming road closures and advising drivers to seek alternative routes.

Although the northbound carriageway was initially shut between junctions 10 and nine, it has since reopened with a diversion in place. National Highways personnel are assisting in traffic management, facilitating the smooth flow of vehicles.
