New Religious Leaders Advocate Peace in Easter Sermons

Date:

The Archbishop of Canterbury and the Pope delivered their inaugural Easter messages today, both emphasizing the importance of peace. Dame Sara Mullally urged an end to violence in the Middle East during her address at Canterbury Cathedral. Meanwhile, the Pope spoke to a large crowd in Rome’s St. Peter’s Square, urging those with the ability to start wars to instead choose peace. These messages marked a strong stance on peace from the new religious leaders.

Dame Sarah expressed heightened prayers amidst the ongoing US-Israel conflict with Iran, advocating for peace, justice, and freedom for the people in the Middle East and the Gulf region. Her Easter sermon came shortly after being installed as the first female Archbishop of Canterbury, with a focus on the significance of the Easter season in the land of Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection.

Addressing the congregation on the resurrection of Jesus Christ, the archbishop emphasized the hope brought by the empty tomb and called for an end to violence in the region. She extended prayers to individuals facing personal struggles, assuring them of God’s presence in their darkest moments.

Formerly England’s chief nursing officer, Dame Sarah acknowledged the caregivers in hospitals and hospices, highlighting the importance of their compassionate work. During her installation, she also prayed for peace and justice globally.

On the other hand, at the Vatican, Pope Leo XIV delivered his first Easter message, urging dialogue over conflict and advocating for peace. He called for those with the power to start wars to choose peace through dialogue and encounter, rather than domination. Thousands gathered to hear his message, showing support with posters affirming their unity with the pontiff.

Leo referenced the concept of the “globalization of indifference,” warning against growing accustomed to violence and indifference. He emphasized the nonviolent essence of Easter and announced a special prayer vigil for peace at St. Peter’s Basilica. This initiative followed in the footsteps of a similar event organized by the late Pope Francis in 2013 for Syria, rallying against the civil war and military intervention.
