“Police Remind Dog Owners: Control Pets Near Livestock”

Date:

Police have issued a crucial reminder to dog owners to ensure control over their pets following a tragic incident where four alpacas were fatally attacked at a farm. The distressing event occurred near Wisbech St Mary in Cambridgeshire, involving two dogs that killed the alpacas and injured two others. The authorities have taken custody of the dogs, identified as Rottweilers, and are currently conducting an inquiry into the incident.

Law enforcement officials are urging individuals visiting rural areas to leash their dogs, emphasizing the potential legal consequences if farm animals are harmed or frightened. Alpacas and llamas were recently included in the protected livestock category due to their growing presence on British farms. Sergeant Tom Nuttall from Cambridgeshire Constabulary’s Rural Crime Action Team expressed gratitude to those involved in the investigation and reminded dog owners of their responsibility to keep their pets secure and restrained in rural settings.

The rise in dog attacks on livestock has led to increased financial losses, with incidents costing an estimated £1.95 million in 2025, marking a 10% increase from the previous year according to NFU Mutual data. Sheep and lambs are frequently targeted, with a notable case from last year where 44 sheep were killed in a single dog attack.

To address this issue, the police have provided guidance for dog walkers venturing into the countryside, advising them to report any instances of livestock worrying by calling 101, or 999 if the incident is ongoing.
