Energy provider British Gas has released advice for households in the UK preparing for severe snowfall this upcoming weekend.
The Met Office has issued a yellow weather alert for snow, starting at 3pm on Saturday in Scotland and lasting until 6am on Sunday. In addition, warnings have been issued for strong winds in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. These alerts caution that Storm Dave may lead to power outages over the weekend.
The snow warning specifically affects north-west Scotland, where up to 20cm of snow may accumulate, potentially causing flooding with 50mm of rainfall expected.
British Gas has compiled a set of recommendations for households anticipating snow, urging individuals to take proactive measures. These include improving insulation by sealing gaps around windows and doors, protecting pipes, and insulating exposed piping for boilers, heating systems, and water supplies.
Furthermore, the company advises testing smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors, especially for those using indoor heating methods like log burners. It is also suggested to locate the stopcock in case of a burst pipe emergency.
British Gas also suggests preparing for possible heating loss during heavy snowfall by keeping sleeping bags, blankets, and warm coats readily available. They recommend assembling an emergency kit with three days’ worth of food, essential supplies, medicines, water, non-perishable food, snacks, blankets, a torch, batteries, and a phone charger.
For car owners, British Gas highlights the importance of checking brakes, heaters, tires, and windscreen wipers before winter sets in. They also emphasize the significance of staying connected with household members and having a contingency plan in place in case of being stranded due to heavy snow.
In addition, British Gas encourages individuals to check on elderly or vulnerable neighbors and relatives to ensure they have necessary provisions to endure cold weather conditions.
