Former football star Joey Barton has entered a plea of not guilty in response to charges of assault arising from an alleged altercation at a golf club. Barton, a former player for Manchester City and Newcastle United, along with co-accused Gary O’Grady, faced the accusation of assault causing grievous bodily harm during a court appearance in Liverpool.
Appearing via videolink from HMP Liverpool, where he has been in custody since his arrest, Barton, wearing glasses and a grey fleece top, denied the charge. The trial, scheduled by Honorary Recorder of Liverpool Judge Andrew Menary KC, is set to commence on September 1 and is expected to last seven days.
On the other hand, O’Grady, who appeared in person, did not enter a plea and is slated for another hearing in June. The reported victim, Kevin Lynch, was hospitalized in a serious but stable condition after sustaining facial and bodily injuries during the incident that occurred near Huyton and Prescot Golf Club on March 8 at around 9 pm.
Lynch was discovered covered in blood near the golf club entrance before being taken to the hospital. Accounts from a prior court session revealed that Barton was engaged in a heated exchange with Lynch at the golf club’s bar before the physical altercation took place.
Witnesses stated that a group of men later moved outside, where two individuals allegedly took turns assaulting Lynch, punching, kicking, and even stamping on him while he was on the ground. Despite calls to stop the violence, the attack persisted. Following the incident, some of the men departed in a vehicle, while others allegedly criticized Lynch for his behavior.
The victim reportedly suffered a severe injury, with concerns raised by medical professionals about potential permanent damage, including the loss of eyesight in one eye. Lynch, known for his involvement with various football clubs and as the founder of a school catering to children with special needs, has a significant community presence.
In contrast, Barton enjoyed a successful football career, making numerous Premier League appearances for clubs such as Manchester City, Newcastle United, Queens Park Rangers, and Burnley. He also represented England once. After retiring from playing, Barton transitioned into management roles at Fleetwood Town and Bristol Rovers and currently hosts the Common Sense with Joey Barton podcast.
