“AI Identifies Hidden Heart Fat, Predicts Heart Failure Risk”

Date:

A cutting-edge Artificial intelligence (AI) technology has been developed to identify hidden fat around the heart, providing early predictions of heart failure risk up to five years in advance. This breakthrough allows doctors to intervene proactively, potentially preventing fatal heart attacks before they occur.

The innovative AI tool, created by researchers at the University of Oxford, analyzes routine heart CT scans to detect textural changes in the heart’s surrounding fat tissue, indicating potential inflammation and poor heart muscle health. These subtle changes, not visible through conventional medical imaging, can serve as early warning signs of heart failure.

Through a study involving 72,000 patients across nine NHS Trusts in England who underwent cardiac CT scans between 2007 and 2022, researchers found that individuals classified in the highest-risk group were 20 times more likely to develop heart failure compared to those in the lowest-risk group. High-risk patients had a significant one in four chance of developing heart failure within five years, underscoring the predictive power of the AI technology.

The British Heart Foundation (BHF), which sponsored the study, highlighted the lack of previous accurate methods for forecasting heart failure development. The AI algorithm demonstrated an 86% accuracy rate in predicting the risk of heart failure within the next five years, prompting plans for wider implementation across the NHS.

Dr. Sonya Babu-Narayan, clinical director at the BHF, emphasized the importance of early heart failure diagnosis to enable effective management strategies and improve patient outcomes. The AI tool’s ability to identify individuals at high risk early on offers a valuable opportunity to enhance cardiovascular care and potentially extend patients’ longevity and quality of life.

Professor Charalambos Antoniades, a British Heart Foundation professor of cardiovascular medicine at the University of Oxford who spearheaded the research, highlighted the significant advancements in heart failure treatment facilitated by the AI technology. The tool’s automated risk scoring system based on cardiac CT scan data streamlines decision-making for healthcare providers, enabling tailored interventions for patients at elevated risk.

Looking ahead, the potential nationwide rollout of this program holds promise for reducing hospital burdens by promoting longer and healthier lives for patients through informed and targeted treatment approaches.
