A woman was left nearly penniless and in fear for her life due to a malicious extortion scheme perpetrated by someone she considered a friend. Jenna Thompson, 40, carried out a deceitful plot where she impersonated a man and his son, sending intimidating messages and threats, including images of weapons, to coerce her victim into giving her money. Over a nine-month period, Thompson manipulated her friend into transferring over £23,000 in 87 transactions, depleting the victim’s bank account from £28,000 to a mere 16p.
The victim, who had previously helped Thompson financially, was subjected to threats of harm to her property and herself if she did not comply with the demands. Thompson, from Jarrow, South Tyneside, used the victim’s trust against her to commit this heartless act. Following her arrest, Thompson admitted to the crimes, showing no remorse for her actions, claiming financial difficulties as her motivation.
The victim, who endured constant threats and intimidation, expressed feeling trapped, controlled, and in constant fear for her safety. The relentless messages and demands for money took a toll on her mental well-being, leaving her in a state of perpetual anxiety and isolation. Despite the victim’s compliance, the financial loss was devastating.
Thompson, with no prior criminal record, pleaded guilty to blackmail and admitted to orchestrating the extortion scheme that drained the victim’s savings. In addition to a 40-month prison sentence, she was issued a restraining order and will face further legal action under the Proceeds of Crime Act.
During sentencing, it was noted that Thompson’s actions had severe consequences for the victim, who was left with minimal funds and enduring psychological trauma. The court recognized that although Thompson did not intend to carry out the threats, her victim perceived them as genuine and suffered significant harm as a result. Thompson’s defense acknowledged the wrongdoing, attributing it to desperation stemming from financial struggles, expressing remorse and shame for her actions.
