“PR Firm Director Dies in Tragic Tree Accident”

Date:

An inquest revealed that a tragic incident led to the death of a PR firm director when a large branch broke off from a decaying tree and struck her while she was out walking with her husband in West Didsbury. Jen Higgins, aged 49, was walking with her husband Gawen and another couple on the evening of August 30 last year when the fatal accident occurred. The mature beech tree, located in a private garden, had been pruned many years ago, leading to hidden decay that weakened the wood significantly.

Witnesses reported that a section of the tree’s canopy suddenly collapsed, causing the branch to fall onto Ms. Higgins. Her husband recounted that they had decided to take a leisurely walk on the warm summer evening and were holding hands when they heard a loud crack before the branch struck them. Despite his minor injuries, Ms. Higgins bore the brunt of the impact and tragically passed away at the scene despite efforts from off-duty medics to help.

During the inquest, it was acknowledged that the tree had substantial decay that was not visibly apparent, leading to the unforeseeable accident. The coroner mentioned that there were no mandatory inspections required for such situations, and it was uncertain whether the responsibility lay with the homeowner or the tree surgeon hired to maintain the tree. The absence of a Tree Preservation Order or conservation status for the tree was noted, and it was emphasized that the tree had since been professionally managed.

The official cause of Ms. Higgins’ death was attributed to severe chest injuries resulting from the impact of the falling branch. The family chose not to comment further following the proceedings, releasing a statement expressing their deep sorrow over the loss of their beloved Jen Higgins. Described as a cherished wife, daughter, sister, daughter-in-law, aunt, and esteemed member of the local business community, her family asked for privacy as they mourned her passing. They indicated that further updates would be provided in due course.
