“Kindle Update: Older Models Lose Access to New Books”

Date:

Kindle users were recently alerted about a forthcoming restriction on their e-readers, which will prevent access to new books. The deadline for this change is just one day away, set to take effect on May 20, 2026. This update specifically impacts older Kindle models like the Kindle 5 and the Kindle Paperwhite 1st Gen, halting the ability to add or read new content.

For those concerned about their devices being affected by this Amazon update, here is a comprehensive list of models that will be blocked from accessing the book store this week:

– Kindle 1st Generation (2007)
– Kindle DX and DX Graphite (2009 and 2010)
– Kindle Keyboard (2010)
– Kindle 4 (2011)
– Kindle Touch (2011)
– Kindle 5 (2012)
– Kindle Paperwhite 1st Generation (2012)

Notably, existing book libraries will remain accessible for owners of these devices. However, after the impending deadline, the affected Kindles will essentially transform into “read-only” devices.

Amazon’s statement to Mirror Online confirmed, “Starting May 20, 2026, customers with Kindle and Kindle Fire devices released in 2012 or earlier will no longer be able to acquire, borrow, or download new content via the Kindle Store.” The company emphasized that while these models have been supported for up to 18 years, advancements in technology necessitate discontinuing support for these older devices.

Although this change may be disappointing for users with older Kindles, Amazon is offering a silver lining by providing 20 percent discounts on select new Kindle models and a £15 eBook credit to affected customers. With a variety of new Kindles available, including standard models and Colorsoft devices with color screens, users have ample choices to explore. For a more enhanced reading experience, the Scribe range offers digital pens for note-taking, document annotation, and book markup.
