A cherished retired school principal passed away months after struggling to eat properly. Ciara Bolton, aged 30, shared how her life drastically changed when her mother Claire, 68, was diagnosed with a severe illness in September last year. Claire had been experiencing difficulty swallowing food, initially attributed to a long-standing heartburn issue.
Following medical consultations, Claire received the devastating news of stage four oesophageal cancer. Claire, who had dedicated over three decades to education in Liverpool schools and internationally, was described by Ciara as a unique and selfless individual.
Despite initially inconclusive results from an endoscopy, further tests confirmed the advanced cancer. Unfortunately, the cancer had spread too extensively for surgical treatment. Claire underwent chemotherapy but her health rapidly declined, leading to her passing in November after a hospital admission.
In memory of her mother, Ciara is planning a charity walk from Hull to Liverpool with friends to raise funds for Cancer Research UK. The self-funded effort aims to collect donations for the cause. Ciara expressed her determination to complete the walk, highlighting the importance of raising awareness for oesophageal cancer, a disease often diagnosed too late for effective treatment.
Ciara acknowledged the invaluable support of her family, especially her aunt Carmel, during her mother’s illness. She emphasized the emotional significance of the charity walk and how proud her mother would be of her achievement. Contributions to Ciara’s fundraiser can be made on the Cancer Research UK website.
