“UK Pet Shop Pet Planet Enters Administration After 27 Years”

Date:

A British pet shop, Pet Planet, has recently gone into administration after operating for 27 years, offering a wide range of products for pets. The Livingston-based online retailer, known for its commitment to providing pet owners with convenience, quality, and care, appointed administrators on March 31.

Founded in July 1999, Pet Planet has been a go-to destination for pet food, toys, and litter. The company prides itself on its over 25 years of passion for pets and its reputation as a trusted source for all pet needs, maintaining strong customer relationships.

The administration of Pet Planet aligns with a broader trend in the UK, where business administrations surged by 41% in January 2026. Factors contributing to this increase include high-street closures, wage hikes, subdued consumer spending, and escalating operational expenses.

Insolvency Service data reported a 14% rise in companies entering administration in January compared to the same period in 2025. By late February, insolvency rates persisted at high levels, particularly impacting the retail and hospitality sectors.

Experts such as Sarah Rayment, the managing director at Kroll, emphasized the ongoing challenges facing UK businesses and the potential for further distress and insolvencies. Todd Davison from Purbeck Insurance Services highlighted the personal implications for company directors, warning about the risks associated with failed personal guarantees in securing financial support.

Notable brands like National Car Parks (NCP), with nearly a century in operation, and Denby Pottery, a renowned name since 1809, have also succumbed to administration recently. The landscape of business insolvencies underscores the economic pressures faced by various sectors in the UK.
